Moody Teen Boy's Room Makeover

My son turned 15 and requested a full size bed and an all black room. I was cool with upgrading him to a full size bed, but an all black room felt a little intense to me. Cue the Portola Paint limewash in one of their darkest hues called Half Life. It felt like a nice compromise between our divergent tastes. Once I got on board with black linen curtains for a blackout effect to help him sleep and got him on board with the limewash, he gave me free rein to make all the other decor decisions. Smart man. I created the mature and moodily elegant bedroom of my dreams that he adores.

I went with the Thuma platform bed in walnut with boucle pillowboard for its simplicity and ease of assembly. The clever Japanese inspired joinery meant we were able o assemble the entire bed frame in 5 minutes.

To generate a subtle contrast to the dark limewash walls and the dark wood bed, I insisted on the Thuma nightstand in natural wood and not walnut. I like that its a set that doesn't feel contrived and matchy matchy. The arrangement feels more collected.

I have had tapestries on my mind since this blog post and I finally went for it with the antique tapestry I sourced on Ebay. I know it feels mature and not like a teen boys room at all but I needed those luscious green tones to breath some life into the space. And I am counting on the space growing with my son into adulthood where it becomes an elegant guest room for him to come back to with a partner. A mother can hope, right?

Another vintage item I added into the mix is a vintage Danish safari chair. It adds more contrast by way of the white leather something old to balance out the newness. Lastly, the Revival solid wool rug in dark grey softly grounds the furnishings grouping.

And here is a reminder of where we came from. His tween room that I pulled together during the pandemic was totally cute in my opinion, but now we are both obsessed with the current sophisticated iteration. It feels like a completely different room.
