Cabinetry plays a pivotal role in defining the character of a home. The right wood species, stain, or paint finish can instantly tie your interiors to the architectural style and overall mood you want to achieve.
Midcentury Homes

For midcentury homes that are getting an update, I like to use walnut or teak wood because those woods were used originally for cabinetry in that time period. They also used Rosewood (but that's an exotic wood no longer an option today). And mahogany, but I find that wood to have tones that are too deep red for my taste and hard to work around. The darker tones of walnut and teak pair beautifully with terrazzo, stone, or brass accents with rich contrast.
Scandifornian and Japandi Homes
Scandifornian and Japandi aesthetics are all about airiness, calm, and natural light. Blonde woods like white oak or ash lend a pale, sun-bleached look that feels effortless and serene. These woods emphasize texture and subtle grain while keeping the palette neutral. They create a foundation that allows textiles, ceramics, and greenery to stand out. Blonde wood cabinetry harmonizes with plaster walls, pale stone, and minimalist hardware.

Traditional and Transitional Charm
For homes with traditional or transitional architecture, a coffee-stained oak (white or red) hits the right note. This finish has just enough richness to feel classic, while remaining versatile enough for modern updates. The medium brown tone conveys warmth and permanence. It’s a grounded choice that complements molding details, stone countertops, and traditional layouts.

Painted Cabinetry: A Balancing Act Across All Styles
Sometimes, the best way to let wood shine is to pair it with painted cabinetry. Paint introduces contrast and balance—preventing an all-wood room from feeling heavy. Painted finishes can soften a space or add bold personality. A crisp white balances walnut in midcentury homes, while muted greys or earthy hues pair beautifully with blonde woods in Japandi spaces. Paint allows you to adapt cabinetry to evolving design trends without replacing all the woodwork.
