A Stunning Fireplace Surround in Mar Vista - A How To

When I first walked into this Mar Vista house I knew right away that the fireplace surround had to go. Along with new paint colors, lighting, mirrors, and rugs that we were selecting as quick as can be to turn the tacky flip into a modern bohemian home  - I insisted we do something about the fireplace.

BEFORE - Yucka. Dark, bland, cheesy attempt at modern, with crystals in the non-functioning fireplace.

PROGRESS - I devised a simple design using the high contrast graphic Tulum cement tile from The Cement Tile Shop. Besides the fact that its awesome, it was also an in-stock quick ship item. Score. The existing fireplace tile surround was demolished. 

We planned out the exact layout and size first on a sheet of cardboard.

Drywall was added above and a frame was created to hold the new tile.

We also decided to cut into the floor to create a flush transition from wood to tile. When the tile was installed and the surround complete, it was time to pick out a piece of live edge walnut wood as a mantel from the gracious House of Hardwood.

AFTER - Finally, the pieces came together to become one show stopping fireplace to be admired room every angle in the open floor plan of the home. So good. The low slung Togo sofas and chunky Beni Ourain rug in the den aren't too hard to look at either.
